Magnificent Magnesium

When you google Magnesium online you will find this definition:

Magnesium is a co-factor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation [1-3]. Magnesium is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolysis.

Sounds pretty important, right? So why do doctors rarely inform you of the importance of this mineral? Unfortunately most doctors know more about medicine than preventive healthcare.

I first learned about my own need for more magnesium 3 years ago when I was suffering from chronic back pain and both hamstring and peroneal tendinitis. Actually, I paid $45 at the time to pull up a paper on antibiotic related tendinitis, because my hamstring tendinitis (and possibly my issues in the ankle area too) was caused by the antibiotic Levaquin.

In this white paper I learned about various different minerals that would help to heal soft tissue and the one that stuck with me and really made the difference was Magnesium. At the same time I also learned about the benefits Turmeric and began using that as my a natural medicine when I experienced pain. More on Turmeric vs pain killers in the next blog.

In the U.S., over 70% of us are deficient in magnesium. It has a lot to do with our high fat / low carb diet. This is yet another reason that plant based eating is so important. When I first discovered my need for Magnesium I went straight to Publix and grabbed up Magnesium supplements. While that was a good start, it is not even close as effective as eating Magnesium Rich Foods! If you can move toward eating mainly plant based (especially these foods shown below) then you will also benefit from the other nutrients and the sophisticated immune defenses that come with whole plant foods.

Every time I bring up eating plant based 80% of my friends and family roll their eyes. I know it may not be the FUNNEST conversation, but I assure you that you can find foods you like as there are literally thousands of options to choose from. Plus, how much fun is it to be chronically ill or be in constant pain? I assure you the joy of life benefits outweigh any negatives that you may currently perceive.
