Emotional Eater? 4 Ways to Trick Your Brain...

How often to you eat or drink because of an emotional attachment to food or beverages?


Think about your coffee in the morning, or maybe that wine or cocktail in the afternoon. These are great examples of drinks that have emotional ties. Of course, there are plenty of foods that do too.

How can we avoid food and beverages that are bad for our health, but oh so good for our current emotional state? What are those foods anyway?

This is such a personal question as we are all so very different. However, it usually comes down to foods that are high in sugar, salt, and alcohol!

Fortunately we can retrain and trick out brain!! How so? Here a couple examples:

Morning Coffee Mug - There is something about drinking your morning coffee that has you breathing deeply. If you drink your coffee black, then keep doing what you're doing! However, if you are like me and only enjoy coffee with tons of cream and sweeteners then you will have to TRICK your brain!! Find a healthier beverage like tea or a plant based morning shake and drink it out of your favorite mug!

Salty Comfort Foods - Do you crave salty foods like chips or fries? This desire calls for retraining your brain to like healthier salty foods. My favorite is avocado toast! I use Ezekial Bread and a perfectly ripe avocado (must be soft but not brown on the inside)... then I use a mixture of pink himalayan salt, ground black pepper, and hemp seeds to season with. Even if you don't like avocados this trick will change your mind and satisfy your salt cravings.

Sugar Cravings - If your emotions turn you to eat sugary filled foods I have GREAT news!! There are fantastic ways to retrain your brain by focusing on healthier plant based options. My favorite go to's are Sweet Dark Cherries... not only are they considered Nature's Candy, but they are filled with fiber, anthocyanins, melatonin, and much much more! If that doesn't do the trick how about small portions of dark chocolate? I love Organic Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds. Filled with magnesium, protein, and more!

Cocktail Hour - If you love a glass of wine in the evenings please know that the wine we buy at the grocery store is just not healthy. Did you know that wine and beer can have over 72 chemical preservatives and sugars. Thanks to the beer and wine lobbyists they don't even have to have an ingredient label. Have you ever noticed that? Look for a label on your next bottle of wine? We have NO CLUE what we're drinking. OH, and I'm not bashing anyone... I LOVE my wine as well! It is definitely one of my vices. We want to limit our alcohol consumption to just the weekends though to give our body a fighting chance to flush out the toxins. How about filling up your wine glass with juice instead? You can blend your own in a juicer or find an organic, no added sugar option at the grocery store. I'm not saying juice is the healthiest thing... just healthier than wine!
