Food Triggers

During this crazy time of social distancing and quarantining I pray that you are eating healthy, working out, and getting some sunshine!!

If you are like me, left with more time yet a crowded household you may be tempted to give into some sweet treats.

I definitely recommended finding not only healthy foods that you LOVE, but letting yourself have a few vices as well.

As I was cleaning out our pantry last week I discovered a single packaged Keto Cup. First of all, I am not a fan of Keto, but this was actually a plant based item that I had tried out months ago.

I remember that they were delicious and was so excited!! A peanut butter cup looking package of deliciousness! YES! This would be my treat today, I deserved it after all, right?

Although I have more time, there is definitely some stress involved in having everyone here at home. I am cleaning more than usual with hubby and my teenage boys home all the time. Not to mention the cooking, my goodness they eat SO MUCH! Then, there's the referring as we have a lot of testosterone in this house now.

Basically because of remote learning I have become a combination of a guidance counselor, hall monitor, teaching assistant, cafeteria lady, and janitor rolled up into one.

So, I deserved this h

azelnut butter cup! It was vegan, keto, paleo, and gluten free!

When I went to bed that night I knew something was wrong. My entire business has been built on helping people use nutrition to alleviate pain...

and here I was with the annoying pain of restless leg syndrome and unable to sleep.

Even though I had eaten this before... the hustle and bustle of my normal day doesn't usually lend itself to analyzing why I feel a certain way. Now, everything in my life is moving slower (I really like this part of our strange world right now). I have time to evaluate how I feel and why... I am listening to my body which is so important on the road toward optimal health.

Something in the Keto Cup has made my body very unhappy. Something that human bodies were probably never meant to consume. But what was it?

What was actually in this little cup of taste-bud bliss? Here are the listed ingredients in descending order:

Organic Hazelnuts, Organic Cacao, Organic Jerusalem Artichoke Fiber, Organic Cacao Butter, Organic Monk Fruit Extract, Himalayan Sea Salt, Organic MCT Oil

Seems innocent enough. But, what exactly is Organic MCT Oil? That was the first to capture my attention because I don't know what MCT is.

Turns out the MCT oil is a dietary supplement made up of fats from coconut oil, palm oil, and dairy products. It's a supplement that people use to lose weight. The problem is that oils are not good for us and tropical oils like those found in coconut oil and palm oil can trigger health issues for some of us.

Bottom line, the best way to eat to alleviate pain and inflammation is to avoid processed food altogether. I'm not really picking on Keto Cups... every time I sway from eating Whole Plant Based Foods somewhere in my body pain is triggered.

You may not have a reaction to these cups, but I should've known that I would. My body is especially sensitive, which I believe is a blessing. The problem is that I start feeling SO amazing when I'm eating right and after awhile I conveniently forget and let something highly processed into my system because it sounds so healthy and delicious.

It's not worth it is always my conclusion. Only wine is worth it. That's where I stand.

What healthy habits have you improved upon while self isolating? How are you listening to your body?

I'm trying to add commenting to be allowed below. Technology... maybe by the time you're reading this it shows up. If so I want to know what triggers you have and how you are taking care of yourself during this time.
