Why is it that we crave junk food? Wouldn't it be so much easier if we actually craved fruits and vegetables? Before chemicals were added to the foods we ate (back when we just ate real food) we WOULD indeed crave healthy foods, especially fruit. Not only did we used to crave healthy foods, but our brain would let us know when to stop eating. But then... the food industry came into the picture and they know how to make money and make loads of it by adding in chemicals that will easily become our addiction.
You see, when we eat certain foods we get a sense of euphoria due to The Reward Center of our Brain. Like addictive drugs, highly palatable foods trigger feel-good brain chemicals such as dopamine. Once people experience pleasure associated with increased dopamine transmission from eating certain foods, they quickly feel the need to eat or drink that same item again.
The same reward and pleasure centers of the brain that are triggered by addictive drugs like cocaine and heroin are also activated by food, especially foods rich in:
Even though our rational, conscious mind “knows” that these cravings are bad for us, some other part of our brain is now out of whack and without a plan we find ourselves eating unhealthy foods again and again!

Most of us experience some sort of food addiction. As I have said many times, my two vices are wine and cheese. As I am sitting here discussing this I find myself craving BOTH of these!
Diseased cells in our bodies also crave sugar, salt, and saturated fat... in fact this is the perfect recipe to FEED disease. No wonder heart disease and cancer affects one in every three Americans!
The trick is figuring out how to limit these foods and knowing which foods you should quit cold turkey. Incidentally, this is why I CAN'T keep brownies in the house. I have NO control when it comes to brownies, I am HIGHLY ADDICTED to them therefore I had to quit eating them altogether!
