A few years ago, before becoming a Certified Holistic Nutritionist I was out with my husband and we met up with another couple. The wife was just gorgeous, however she suffered severely from MS. My heart went out to her and I had actually just read an article a few days prior regarding Aspartame's role in the neurological system of our bodies and how it could cause MS in some people.
I know that this theory has since been disputed by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and other organizations. But that evening I watched this beautiful woman down at least 6 Diet Cokes and couldn't help but to think that the correlation may very well be real.
Of course, like usual when I am out and about and see these types of situations I am politely quiet while my inner voice is screaming TELL HER, TELL HER!!! I know that most people don't want me to tell them a thing and if I did then I would be the hater trying to take away the one thing that brings her joy.
So, what's up? Was this just a coincidence or what? Well, let's look at some scientific data.
Aspartame contains the excitotoxin aspartate as 40% of its molecular structure. Did you see that? It actually has toxin in its name!
Numerous studies have shown that consuming aspartame can significantly elevate the excitotoxin level in the blood and there is a common situation during which the excitotoxin exposure is even greater. This takes place when aspartate (as aspartame) is combined in the diet with monosodium glutamate (MSG); this can create blood levels that are several folds higher than normal. Normally, most of these excitotoxins are secreted from microglial immune cells in the central nervous system. This not only destroys these myelin-producing cells it also breaks down the blood-brain barrier (BBB), allowing excitotoxins in the blood stream to enter the site of damage. With the BBB damaged, as in MS, these excitotoxins can freely enter the site of injury, greatly magnifying the damage. So, we see that dietary excitotoxins, such as aspartame and MSG, can greatly magnify the damage produced in multiple sclerosis. Likewise, excitotoxins have been shown to breakdown the BBB as well. Let's take the information above and look at the 6 most dangerous toxins. The top two are MSG and Aspartate! This helps understand why the combination of the two would then have a significant effect on the human body.
Even Wikipedia says that excitotoxicity is the pathological process by which nerve cells are damaged or killed by excessive stimulation by neurotransmitters such as glutamate and similar substances.
If Multiple Sclerosis is (as defined by their official website) an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body... then why oh why wouldn't doctors suggest that patients with MS sustain from consuming these toxins?
Why would the National MS Society say that aspartame is safe when it is obvious that excitotoxins do indeed affect the nervous system? Wouldn't you think that if you had a disease of the Central Nervous System you would avoid any toxins that would have a negative affect? Also, wouldn't you consume foods that would provide only nutrients into your immune system as well?
According to Dr. Russell Blaylock, a recently retired neurosurgeon no one should be consuming Aspartame and those responsible for putting it on the market should be held responsible for unleashing an agent of chemical warfare on an unsuspecting public.
Dr. Blaylock has been warning for years and has authored the book "Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills". Blaylock says that Aspartame and Multiple Sclerosis are closely related. According to Blaylock the MS Society has chosen to hang on to industry funding rather than to warn its members. Blaylock explains the biological mechanism by which Aspartame circumvents the blood-brain-barrier and gets at the vital nervous tissues - the grey matter in our heads. CLICK HERE for more details.
So, I will let you judge for yourself whether you think there is a connection between Aspartame and MS. As I always say friends, be careful with what you are consuming and I must add to also beware that those organizations meant to help you are also concerned with sponsors... this can lead to a situation where their focus is compromised.
